Staying Safe During Wildfire Smoke and Power Outages
(2 Minute Read) — With wildfire activity increasing across Oregon & Washington and the potential for smoke impacts and power outages in our area, we wanted to share a few reminders and resources to help keep you and your loved ones safe. We encourage everyone to monitor local conditions, limit outdoor exposure when air quality is poor, and take appropriate precautions for your health and well-being.
The following information is based on guidance from the CDC and other emergency preparedness resources.
Wildfire Smoke Safety
Wildfire smoke can affect everyone, but it may be especially harmful for children, older adults, pregnant women, and those with heart or lung conditions. To help reduce exposure:
- Monitor local air quality through AirNow or your preferred weather app.
- Stay indoors when air quality reaches unhealthy levels and keep windows and doors closed.
- Use an air purifier or high-efficiency HVAC filter if available.
- Avoid activities that can worsen indoor air quality, such as burning candles, using fireplaces, or vacuuming.
- If you need to be outdoors for an extended period, consider wearing a well-fitting respirator or mask designed to filter smoke.
Power Outage Safety
Power outages from wildfires can create unexpected challenges, especially during extreme weather conditions. The CDC recommends:
- Never use generators, grills, camp stoves, or other fuel-burning devices indoors or near doors, windows, or vents.
- Use battery-powered flashlights instead of candles when possible.
- Keep cell phones and other essential devices charged and have backup batteries available.
- If temperatures become unsafe, consider staying with friends or family or visiting a community cooling or warming center.
- Ensure carbon monoxide detectors are working properly and have fresh batteries.
Stay Informed
Monitor local emergency alerts, weather forecasts, and guidance from public safety officials. If evacuation orders are issued, follow them immediately.
