No Cap, Gen Z is More Likely to Fall for Online Scams

(3 Minute Read) — We know members of Gen Z are digital natives, so it would seem they’re less likely to fall for an online scam. But recent studies reveal that even the tech-savvy Generation Z (born between the late 1990s and early 2010s) is frequently targeted and often falls victim to scams.

According to a Deloitte survey, Gen Z members are three times more likely to get caught in an online scam than Boomers and twice as likely to have a social media account hacked. These scams range from phishing and identity theft to romance scams and cyberbullying. The numbers are staggering: in 2022, online scam victims under 20 lost an estimated $210 million.

Why is Gen Z So Vulnerable?

There are a few key reasons why Gen Z, despite their tech prowess, is more susceptible to online scams:

More Tech, More Risk

  • Firstly, Gen Z uses technology way more than any other generation. More screen time means more chances for scammers to sneak in. Whether it’s through phishing, identity theft, romance scams, or cyberbullying, the more you’re online, the more you’re exposed.

Convenience Over Safety

  • Growing up with the internet has made younger people very familiar with their devices, sometimes leading them to prioritize convenience over safety. Quick and easy access often trumps cautious behavior.

Gaps in Cybersecurity Education

  • Cybersecurity education for school-aged children often misses the mark, failing to address online safety in a way that resonates with their everyday experiences.

Common Scams Targeting Gen Z

The scams targeting Gen Z are often tailored to their online habits. These include fraudulent websites, fake social media ads, sophisticated phishing emails, and social media impersonation. Younger people’s comfort with online shopping and socializing makes them prime targets for these scams.

Practical Tips for Staying Safe Online

Here are some actionable steps to enhance your online security without compromising convenience:

  • Use Secure Browsers: Choose browsers with strong security features.
  • Adjust App Settings: Enable privacy settings on your apps to control the information shared.
  • Manage Passwords Wisely: Use password managers to keep track of your passwords securely.

Understanding the why behind scams can be a game-changer. Why do these scams exist? Who’s behind them? What can we do about them? Connecting these dots can empower you to navigate the online world more safely.

Remember, staying safe online isn’t just your responsibility. Apps and platforms should also step up their game to protect users. Imagine if social media platforms sent out test phishing emails to help you spot the real ones. Or if privacy settings were more accessible and understandable.

Generation Z is shaping the future. Whether it’s activism, innovation, or just staying connected, online safety is crucial. Embrace smart cybersecurity practices and stay informed about the latest scams. Together, we can create a safer digital world for everyone.
