Unitus stands in support of the Asian American community

Today is the first day of National AAPI Heritage Month, a time to honor the Asian American and Pacific Islanders who have enriched our culture, uplifted our society, and will help shape our future. At Unitus, we seek to celebrate that history. Examining that history reveals a place we need to start right now.

Hate crimes and racially motivated violence targeting Asian, Asian-American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities and individuals has increased over the last 18 months. We believe this is unacceptable and we stand in solidarity with Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. We will continue to do so.

As a community institution whose very purpose is to make life better for the people with whom we live and work, we are committed to supporting organizations that strive for meaningful advancements against anti-Asian hatred, such as the Asian Pacific American Network of Oregon (APANO). To help inspire lasting change, we are donating $2,500 to APANO to support their important work uniting Asians and Pacific Islanders to build power, develop leaders, and advance equity through organizing, advocacy, community development, and cultural work.

We stand against racism in every form and stand in support of those being targeted with hatred. Our DEI Committee will continue to engage all of us in dialogue that ensures that everyone’s voices are heard and respected, and that we cultivate a sense of dignity and belonging for peoples of all backgrounds. We ask every member of our loving Portland metro community to listen, respond with empathy, engage in important discussions, and take action to uplift our Asian American friends, family, neighbors, and community members.
